Focus Areas

Drawing on insights from our strategy development and aligned with our vision and mission for HIV prevention, treatment, and care, we are dedicated to focusing on these key strategic areas moving forward:

01. Institutional strengthening and sustainability

Y+ Kenya is focusing on enhancing the resilience and sustainability of youth-led health organisations, alongside moving towards financial and technical self-sufficiency to address future challenges. The aim is to solidify these organisations’ frameworks, ensuring their long-term effectiveness and survival. Key efforts include conducting detailed organisational assessments to spot and fix weaknesses, creating customised capacity-building programs to improve skills, and developing strategies to maintain their relevance and impact within communities.

Furthermore, Y+ Kenya is boosting its fundraising efforts to support resource-lacking youth-led groups and forging strategic partnerships for financial diversity and stability. The organisation emphasises collective impact through collaborative knowledge-sharing and mutual learning. By implementing a comprehensive M&E framework, Y+ Kenya is also focusing on nurturing the next generation of leaders through mentorship and leadership training, securing a resilient future for youth-led health initiatives.

02. Evidence-based, youth-led programming

At Y+ Kenya, we are committed to the principle that youth-led programming is essential for the success of our initiatives. We understand that the effectiveness of such programming is closely tied to our capacity to address the issues facing young people, using evidence gathered by and from the youth themselves. Our aim is to develop transformative programs grounded in research, documentation, communication, and advocacy, specifically tailored to tackle HIV and SRHR among the youth.

Our strategy focuses on conducting in-depth research to gather data that will shape youth-centric programs, ensuring they meet the actual needs of young people. We strive to communicate effectively, raising awareness and engaging communities and stakeholders to foster positive change in HIV and SRHR. Key to our approach is enhancing social accountability through community-led monitoring and the use of social accountability tools to promote transparent and accountable resource usage.

Moreover, we advocate for improved service delivery and the allocation of resources to youth-friendly services, leveraging our research findings to influence policy and decision-making. By collaborating with other youth-led organisations, we aim to amplify the voices of young people, advocating for their rights and the inclusion of their perspectives in health policy development and decision-making processes.

03. Enhancing individual youth skills and capabilities

We believe boosting young people’s skills is key to their growth and creating a skilled workforce. Our holistic approach combines education, practical experience, and community involvement to prepare them for a bright future.

Our goal is to spark positive change through targeted knowledge. We focus on providing quality education and training to build foundational skills for personal and professional development. We also create networking opportunities, connecting youth with experts and facilitating their participation in international programs and volunteering, enriching their development journey.

04. Innovative HIV and SRHR systems support and service responses

This theme focuses on using technology to improve healthcare and tackle HIV and SRHR issues among adolescents and young people (AYP). Y+ Kenya is employing digital tools to enhance efficiency and extend its reach. Innovations such as telemedicine and mobile apps offer AYP confidential access to health information and services, enabling Y+ Kenya to widen its impact, share knowledge more effectively, and quickly evaluate the success of its programmes.

The goal is to integrate technology and innovation into sustainable programming. Key interventions include developing digital health solutions and tools to automate processes, creating mobile apps for AYP, and using data analytics for monitoring and evaluation. Additionally, Y+ Kenya is committed to training youth-led organisations to use these technologies and implementing engaging digital solutions for AYP, aiming to improve programme delivery and participant engagement.
