Global Fund COVID -19 Kenya Red Cross

In Kenya, youth-led organizations often lack the necessary policies and guidelines for effective operation due to capacity constraints. This absence hampers their planning, development, management, and resource mobilization efforts, leaving them at a disadvantage against more established entities. Despite their potential for peer outreach, they are frequently viewed as target populations rather than as implementers and solution providers, impeding progress towards improved health outcomes and community change. The development of these organizations is crucial for fostering community engagement and capacity building, which are essential for addressing complex social and environmental challenges through collaboration and networking.

Beneficiaries

The initiative targets 15 youth-led organizations in Kenya, encompassing those focused on adolescents and young people living with HIV (AYPLHIV), adolescents and young people (AYPs), adolescent girls and young women (AGYW), and young key populations (YKP).

Project design

The project aims to enhance the capacities of youth-led organizations in several key areas:

  1. Improving leadership skills and governance structures.
  2. Building project management competencies.
  3. Enhancing financial systems and processes.
  4. Strengthening administrative and HR practices.
  5. Developing effective knowledge sharing and learning strategies.
  6. Boosting communication and advocacy capabilities.
  7. Promoting financial sustainability through diverse funding sources and social entrepreneurship.
  8. Improving abilities to monitor and evaluate projects effectively.

Impact

Community-led Monitoring (CLM) training empowers adolescents and young people with the skills to effectively communicate monitoring findings and advocate for improved HIV services and policy changes.

Participants learn to use evidence-based data and narratives to influence policy reforms and service improvements, ensuring the needs of AYPLHIV are met. The training covers key indicators, data collection methods, and strategies for engaging community members in monitoring activities, emphasizing the importance of clear roles, responsibilities, and communication for successful implementation.
