Maarifa Mashinani
The Maarifa Mashindano Mashinani initiative, led by Y+ Kenya, was a unique competition designed to empower adolescents and young people (AYP) aged 15-24 with knowledge on HIV prevention, sexual and reproductive health, and gender-based violence (GBV).

Project design
The Maarifa Mashinani project was a comprehensive initiative designed to empower AYP
through:
● Knowledge Enhancement: Interactive workshops, competitions, and peer education
sessions that equip AYP with comprehensive knowledge on SRHR, HIV prevention, and
GBV.
● Skill Development: Participants were trained in communication, leadership, and advocacy
skills to become agents of change in their communities.
● Community Engagement: The project fostered community engagement by involving local
leaders, health workers, and community members in planning and implementation.
● Innovation and Sustainability: AYP were encouraged to develop innovative solutions to
address SRHR and HIV-related challenges, promoting long-term sustainability.

The Maarifa Mashinani initiative had a significant impact:
● Reached 300 AYP: The project directly engaged and empowered 300 adolescents and
young people.
● Increased Knowledge: Participants demonstrated a significant increase in their
understanding of SRHR, HIV prevention, and GBV.

delayed sexual debut, safe sex practices, and increased healthcare utilization.
